Samsung SyncMaster 2333SW

Samsung have been making major inroads in the consumer world recently, taking the television market by storm both here in New Zealand as well as some overseas markets. We have all become accustomed to their beautiful piano black or “Touch of Colour” finishes they apply to their products. Today was my chance to review one of Samsung’s newest entrants to the computer peripheral market - the Samsung SyncMaster 2333SW, thanks to our friends Playtech.

The SyncMaster 2333SW fits nicely into the top end of the model range with some very healthy specifications (see below), the 23inch LCD format is a nice departure from the standard sizes (22inch and 24inch) whilst the entire range features a more movie friendly screen format of 16:9.

Inside the box you will find all the standard items needed to get yourself up and running, the monitor supports both VGA and DVI-D connections (although I wouldn’t suggest using VGA unless you really have to). The stand requires little effort to assemble, only requiring a quick check of the manual to ensure it really was that simple.

With everything connected and running it was time to test the monitors exclusive Magic Technologies in the form of MagicTune, MagicColor and MagicBright. These technologies provide software and inbuilt wizards to fully control the displays characteristics.

MagicColour features several pre-programmed colour modes that allow you to choose the best match for your needs, or an intelligent mode that enhances colour on the fly whilst providing a more realistic colour representation.

MagicBright is used to control the brightness and contrast settings and also provides several presets for your selection, or select dynamic mode and allow the monitor to change the settings based on the image being displayed.

MagicTune is a wizard based tuning software which used to further tweak the display settings to match or enhance the settings set on the monitor.
If you are a graphics designer, gamer or just a control freak like me, you will want to configure the colour, brightness and contrast settings to your specific needs which is easy enough using the monitors onscreen display settings. I found the Magic Technologies kept changing the settings based on what I was looking at or playing which soon became a little annoying.

So it’s time to load up a few of my favourite games and see what HD gaming is all about (my standard monitor is a 20inch 1680x1050 unit). Well let’s just say I am a convert, the added detail and size of this monitor made playing games much more enjoyable and maybe even helped my Left 4 Dead skills, it certainly felt like I was a better aim but maybe that just me. The movie watching experience was also exceptional with no black bars on standard 16:9 content.

I will find it hard to hand this unit back, it’s left me wanting to upgrade my current unit and with the LAN JAM deal Playtech is running (See below), you could possibly see me sporting my very own SyncMaster 2333SW very soon.

Samsung SyncMaster 2333SW PRICING(30hrs old - used at Lan Jam May 16-17)
  • Pre-order from Playtech now for $379 incl GST
  • The RRP on this monitor at Playtech is $479 incl GST
  • The cheapest price on pricespy is $419 whch is doubtful that they have sotck at this price.
  • If anyone wants this monitor after the event we will sell it for $399 incl GST.
Thanks to [tsw].O for the great review.

Standard refresh rate of 60hz, not many monitors out there that pump out 100hz or the golden 120hz (for 3D Glasses use).
